From grade school bullies to hallway fights to tragic school shootings, students observe or experience violence on a regular basis. Members of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) are taking steps to address youth violence prevention and make their schools and communities safer.
Program Goals
STOP the Violence-Students Taking on Prevention is a peer-to-peer outreach initiative that empowers young people to recognize, report, and reduce the potential for youth violence.
GOALS:
* Empower students
* Engage young people in efforts
* Use peer education to increase youth awareness
* Reduce the potential for youth violence in schools
The program is sponsored by Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Inc. Funding for program development and piloting provided by the U.S., Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). Currently, funding for STOP the Violence is provided by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). Grant #2003-SI-FX-0087
STOP the Violence empowers youth with attitudes, skills, and resources in order to recognize, report, and reduce youth violence. Through the national program, FCCLA members use peer education to: Reach their peers with violence prevention education; Recognize warning signs of potential youth violence; Encourage young people to report troubling behavior; Collaborate with school and community resources to address youth violence; Develop and implement local action projects to reduce the potential for violence in their school.
